Born 19.08.1934 in Navlya (Russia). Graduated from the Philosophical faculty of the Byelorussian State University (Minsk, 1956). When studying there attended lectures and passed exams on theoretical physics at the Faculty of physics of the above university. 1956-1959 - post-graduate courses of the Byelorussian University. 1959-1972 - an associate professor at the chair of philosophy of the Byelorussian University. He was a professor since 1979, the head of the chair of philosophy of the same university. Prof. V. Stepin served in Moscow at first as the Director of the Institute of Natural sciences and techniques history attached to the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (now the Russian Academy of Sciences) (1987) and from 1988 to 2005 as the Director of the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Now he is Scientific Supervisor of the Institute of Philosophy. He is also Head of the chair for philosophical anthropology at the Moscow State Lomonosov University. Prof. V. Stepin is one of the founders and Dean of philosophical faculty of the Russian State University for the Humanities, which was formed as the first institution integrating academic science and high school.

In 1987 he was elected to the corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, in 1994 – to the full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (philosophy of science). He is an honorary consulting professor at the Institute of International Law and Economics (Honkong, 1994), honorary doctor of the university of Karlsruhe (Germany, 1999), foreign member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic Belarus (1998), of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2000), president of the Russian Philosophical Society (2001). In 2001 he has been elected an active member of the International Institute of Philosophy (Paris). National State Award for edition of the New Philosophical Encyclopedia, 4 Vol. (2005).

 

Prof. V. Stepin is a member of editorial boards of the journals «Priroda», «Voprosi filosofii», «Chelovek» (Moscow), of the «Journal for General Philosophy of Science» (Dordrecht, Boston, London), he is the chairman of the editorial board of the series «From the history of the Russian philosophy» which since 1988 has been publishing the works of Russian philosophers such as N. Berdyaev, S. Frank, P. Florensky and others.

 

Prof. V. Stepin is the author of over 300 works including 18 personal monographs. He is an organizer and leader of large-scale joint research programmes with foreign universities and research centers (USA, Germany, France, China) on the problems of philosophy of science and techniques, globalization and basic values of culture.

Shakhov graduated from the Moscow Mendeleyev Chemical-technology Institute (1988); post-graduate course at the Institute of Philosophy at the Russian Academy of Science (1995).

His Ph.D. thesis: «Philosophical aspects of the Old Belief in Russian culture at XVIII century» (1996); his Doctoral degree thesis: «The Old belief's outlook: religious-philosophical bases and the attitude to society» (2000).

The main subject in these investigations is ontological, epistemological and historiosophical opinions of Old Believers.

 

Professional activity:

 

M. Shakhov served as a member of the staff in the Research department of manuscripts of the Russian State Library (1990-1997).

As a practicing theologian he was a director of the Old Belief research centre (1990-1996).

M. Shakhov is professor (2000), the deputy chair of Department for religious studies in the Russian Academy of Public Service at the Russian Federation President Administration.

He is member of the working group on perfection of the legislation on a freedom of conscience of the Commission concerning religious associations at the Government of the Russian Federation, and he is expert of the Committee on affairs of the public and religious organizations at the State Duma of Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

Mr. Shakhov was organizer and main speaker at the conference «Philosophical-methodological problems of religion studies» (Moscow, 2003).

 

Awards:

 

His article «Religious Knowledge, Objective Knowledge on Religion and Science» was published in the journal «The Problems of Philosophy», No. 11, 2004, and was awarded by premium at the Contest «The Theology, Philosophy and Science: difference in ways and unity in aims» by the St. Andrew’s Biblical Theological Institute.

theoretical problems of relations between faith and knowledge, theological and scientific knowledge of being, relationships between  the churches and the state
