В октябре – декабре 2014 г. в Институте философии был прочитан курс из восьми лекций (на английском языке) профессора Роджера Смита «Некоторые англоязычные философские термины: их история и интерпретация». («Some key philosophical words in English – their history and interpretation»). Целью лекций было объяснить, как в англоязычной литературе толкуются некоторые ключевые философские термины, показать встречающееся их различное понимание, а также предостеречь от неправильного перевода их на русский язык.

Title: ‘Some key philosophical words in English – their history and interpretation’

The purpose of the course is (1) to provide practice in listening, understanding and formulating questions in philosophical English, and (2) to show how Anglophile intellectuals use words as part of their debates, in the past and in the present.

As a historian of science and intellectual historian, I am interested in the knowledge and beliefs which people have had, and claimed to be rational, and how they relate to our understanding in the present. This interest requires that we know what people mean when they use a number of complex and debated words. I discuss some key words.
